Sorry for the late delivery. Please consider having
Your chaplains send a get well card. If you have not
Already. Scotts address is on the Department web page

Lenny’s address already.
Here is the latest information I have on webmaster Scott Blair. I will keep you informed as I learn more I will let you know. This is from DVC Mike Ambrosino
"As of yesterday afternoon, he is out of ICU but they still don't know what caused the problem so he'll be spending some time in the hospital.
That's all I know. I'm not sure if he had his phone with him. As soon as I get more information, I'll pass it along."
Also, I had a phone call from Carol Mazzara earlier today. She said the Lenny is being released and that they will be headed home. Please keep both of these Marines in your thoughts.

Below is a little insight to Ted Williams provided by a Marine friend David Lee of the Arthur Meyer Det 472 in Tallahassee. I think our membership might enjoy reading something informative for a change.
S/F George
Ted Williams
He is the only person who is also in the Fishing Hall of Fame as well as the Baseball Hall of Fame.
This is definitely a case of WHO KNEW!
When asked to name the greatest team he was ever on, Ted Williams said:
"The US Marines."
Ted Williams was John Glenn's wingman flying F-9Fs in Korea.
Additional amazing stats: Ted Williams averaged 42 home runs in his career. His military service in 2 wars cost him 8 years of his major league years' prime. That 42 home run average in 8 years totals 336 homers. His career home run totals were 521. Add that to his career homers & it is easily argued that he could have had more homers---many more homers---than Barry Bonds' 762.
The Boston Red Sox slugger who wore No. 9 as a major leaguer, was assigned to an F-9 Panther jet as a pilot. Ted flew a total of 39 combat missions in Korea. He was selected by his commander John Glenn (later the astronaut, senator, and 'septuagenonaut') to fly as Glenn's wingman.
While flying an air strike on a troop encampment near Kyomipo, Williams' F-9 was hit by hostile ground fire. Ted commented later: "The funny thing was I didn't feel anything. I knew I was hit when the stick started shaking like mad in my hands. Then everything went out, my radio, my landing gear, everything. The red warning lights went on all over the plane." The F-9 Panther had a centrifugal flow engine and normally caught fire when hit. The tail would literally blow off most stricken aircraft. The standard orders were to eject from any Panther with a fire in the rear of the plane. Ted's aircraft was indeed on fire, and was trailing smoke and flames. Glenn and the other pilots on the mission were yelling over their radios for Williams to get out.
However, with his radio out, Williams could not hear their warnings and he could not see the condition of the rear of his aircraft. Glenn and another Panther flown by Larry Hawkins came up alongside Williams and lead him to the nearest friendly airfield. Fighting to hold the plane together, Ted brought his Panther in at more than 200-MPH for a crash landing on the Marsden-matted strip. With no landing gear, dive brakes, or functioning flaps, the flaming Panther jet skidded down the runway for more than 3000 feet. Williams got out of the aircraft only moments before it was totally engulfed in flames. Ted Williams survived his tour of duty in Korea and returned to major league baseball.
Pssst: Ted missed out flying combat missions during WW II, because his flying and gunnery skills were so good that he was kept as an instructor for much of the War. During advanced training at Pensacola, Florida Ted would accurately shoot the sleeve targets to shreds while shooting out of wing-overs, zooms, and barrel rolls. He broke the all time record for 'hits' at the school.
Following Pensacola, Ted was sent to Jacksonville for advanced gunnery training. This is the payoff test for potential combat pilots. Ted set all the records for reflexes, coordination, and visual reaction time. As a result of his stunning success he was made an instructor at Bronson field to put Marine aviation cadets through their final paces.
By 1945 Ted got his wish and was finally transferred to a combat wing, but weeks later the War was over. He was discharged from the military in December of 1945.
Seven years later, in December of 1952, Ted was recalled to active duty as a Marine Corps fighter pilot.

#001 APRIL 2018
Dear MCL, we were recently contacted by a group seeking legislation to allow Marines and others affected by the ground water poisoning at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, to sue the government for injuries sustained from this unfortunate incident that occurred over a period of many years. Normally, such lawsuits against the government are not permitted. I know that many of our members and their loved ones were affected by this unfortunate circumstance, and might like to see such legislation signed into law.
It is our natural reaction to want to assist other Marines, particularly those injured in combat or otherwise, in any way that we can. This is admirable. It is what makes us Marines.
But as leaders of the MCL, we must understand that the actions that we take can have unintended ramifications and potentially adverse consequences. Let me explain.
The group that contacted us in this regard has requested to share their message with our membership at the upcoming Convention in Buffalo. And it would seem to be a good message, of interest to many of us. But as you know, we generally permit only veterans or affiliated nonprofit organizations to make presentations or have a booth at such events. If we allow a group like this to have such a platform, we would be going beyond our normal policy and this would establish a new precedent making it very hard for us to refuse future requests from unaffiliated organizations or for-profit entities.
Additionally, as much as this issue is of great concern and interest to all of us, this group proposing the presentations may or may not be the right group to take up this battle on our behalf. The point is, we don’t know them. If we give them our stage, it will appear that they have the endorsement and imprimatur of the MCL, when that is not the case.
I recently learned that this group had already arranged to speak with one of our detachments and was about to propose such a presentation to another.
From my perspective, the same considerations noted above would apply and they should not be permitted to make presentations to our members during official functions or meetings or we risk setting the same precedent and could then find it legally difficult to decline such proposals from other groups, with perhaps less compelling goals, in the future.
Please contact me with any questions.

FROM MARINE JACK BOLAND:
THIS IS A FOLLOW-ON TO DOC REARDON'S DISCUSSION OF KEEPING A VIAL OF A RESIDENT'S MEDICAL CONDITIONS IN THE HOME REFRIGERATOR TO HELP FIRST RESPONDERS IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY. THIS IS INFORMATION ON A DEVICE THAT WILL GET FIRST RESPONDERS INTO YOUR HOME BETTER THAN A FORCED ENTRY:
Residence entry by First Responders
At the 19 Feb. 2018 MCL meeting Doc Reardon advised the members of a program where a vial containing a list of the resident's medical conditions, etc. is placed in the home's refrigerator for first responders information.
Upon arrival at the residence the responders may find the doors locked and the resident unable to unlock same. There is a solution better than forced entry called a Knoxbox.
This system has been around for about 40 years. I became aware of them in my life before The Villages, 33 years in law enforcement.
The system was and is used on office buildings, warehouses, residences, etc. When first responders are dispatched to a residence they will be advised of the Knoxbox through the dispatch system and can quickly enter rather than effecting a forced entry which is messy, time-consuming and usually leads to costly repairs for the homeowner.
For residences, Knoxbox makes a Knox Homebox. The box is 4" x 2 1/2" x 2 1/2." I installed mine on the door jamb outside the hinged side of the main entrance door, above eye level. It is unobtrusive. When purchased in April 2016 the cost was $170.13.
At this point, I want to assure I am not a Knox employee or salesman and receive no compensation for sales, etc.
When installed the owner must notify our Public Safety Department and a fire marshall will respond to the residence. The owner will place a key (or keys) in the box and the fire official will lock same with a department master key. The homeowner cannot access the key in the locked box.
This system greatly reduces the final response time of the call.
The Knox company can be reached at knoxbox.com/Florida or 1-800-GET-KNOX.

ATTENTION: 1960'S GRADUATES FROM PARRIS ISLAND
Parris Island and the Marine Corps did not keep a copy of the red-covered platoon graduation book in the 1960's. The Parris Island Museum Foundation has collected approximately half of the platoon graduation books of that era. I have been working to find copies of the missing books as an outgrowth of another project with which I am involved. What I am asking those of you who graduated from recruit training in the 1960s from Parris Island is to take a look at the list below. The list contains the platoon books that the Museum currently has. If you find that the platoon you were in is NOT listed, then that means that they do not have the book.
I know that few would be willing to give up their platoon book so If your platoon number is NOT listed below, all I need you to do is to copy the pages that begin with the DRILL INSTRUCTORS and the four to six pages that show the recruits in the platoon in their dress blue pictures. That is a total of 5 to 7 pages in most cases. I do not need copies of the entire book. When you are done, please either send them to me at the address listed below or call me and I will pick them up. You can also scan your pictures and send them to this ID. If you wish, I will be happy to pick up your platoon book, copy it at my home, and return the book to you.
I will be traveling up to Parris Island within the next three months to give them what I have been able to collect. They are VERY grateful for this chance to add to their collection.
The Museum has the following platoon books from the 1960's (IF YOUR PLATOON IS NOT LISTED, WE NEED COPIES OR THE PICTURES FROM YOUR BOOK):
1960-
platoons 201, 205, 330, 301, 366.

IF YOU ARE ABLE TO HELP ME OUT OR HAVE A QUESTION, PLEASE CONTACT ME VIA THIS EMAIL OR AT 259-0323.
MY ADDRESS: 2148 DARLINGTON DRIVE, THE VILLAGES, FL, 32162-7722
COMMON QUESTIONS:
1. What about San Diego? This effort is for Parris Island ONLY. San Diego is being handled separately.
2. Two of platoon numbers are alphanumeric, is that a mistake? No, the Platoon Numbers are accurate.
3. Why didn't the Marine Corps keep copies of these books? There is no good answer to that..they just didn't.
4. There are platoon lists on togetherweserved aren't there? Yes but in no order and just partials...it is not a good resource for this request.

Marines,
I am James J. Davies, a member of the Colonel Phillip C. DeLong Detachment #1267, The Villages, FL. I am the proud product of Platoon 300, PISC graduating 2 December 1966. I served in Vietnam (K 3/1 & H&S). I stayed in the Reserves, became commissioned, and eventually retired in the Captain's Cabin of the USS Constitution in Boston in 2003. My reason for writing is that I am working with the Vietnam Virtual Wall Group which seeks to find a photo of every US serviceman/woman killed in Vietnam. I am now in Florida and am the Marine in the Group for Florida. I am now down to 4 Marines who were KIA. As you might imagine, tracing family members for Marines killed 50 years ago is a daunting, extremely difficult task. But, when we succeed, most of the families are proud and grateful to have their Marine more than an engraving on the Wall in Washington.
As I have worked "not to leave anyone behind", the obstacles are sometimes difficult. For example, while the SF-180 we file to get service records provides information about the Marine, casualty dates, etc. I often do not have a Platoon number. I have the dates or approximate timeframe they started at PISC and in two cases have been able to find surviving members on Togetherweserved.com because I was able to find the Platoon number. The guys in that Platoon that I have located have given me a picture. I am working with the Museum at Parris Island but they only have about half of the Platoon Books from the 1960s. The families have mostly all died off and tracing relatives is difficult because many came from broken homes. So, my best shot at success is to locate the Platoon Book.
I have communicated with several of the Vietnam Battalion/Company Associations asking if their members might recall the Marine or have a photo or been in the same Platoon at PISC. I am now asking the Marine Corps League in Florida to do the same thing. In effect, I am pulling out all the stops to find these pictures.
They might have been in Parris Island Platoons in the timeframe I need and would be willing to look in their books to see if the pictures I need are there. The four Marines whose photo I need are:
1. PFC Ruben Bell, Jr: He went to PISC in August 1967. KIA 4 Jan1968 G 2/5 Home of Record: St Petersburg, FL
2. PFC Gregory Carter: He went to PISC in January or February 1969. KIA 12 Oct 1969 CAP1 3/5: Home of Record: Fort Lauderdale, FL
3. PFC Wayne C. Kurlin: He started at PISC on 16 March 1967. KIA 5 May 1968 G 2/27: Home of Record: Orange Park, FL
4. PFC Joe L. Lee: He went to PISC in August 1966. KIA 24 Aug 1967 A 1/9 Home of Record: Home of Record: Jacksonville, FL
I know that this might yield nothing but I am not leaving any stones unturned. I am pretty sure that most Florida Marines would like this effort to succeed.
Thank you in advance for any assistance you might be able to provide. If anyone has a question, please ask them to email me at DAVIES JAMESJ@GMAIL.COM or I can be reached at 352-259-0323. I do not want to leave ANY Marine behind in this effort.

You will be hearing a lot about the nomination process for Detachment Officers over the next two Detachment meetings. I have provided a description of what our Officers do and what is expected of each elected position. In addition, I have attached the form which you can print (or which will be available at the next three meetings) and use to nominate someone for elective office in our Detachment. Bob Beale, our Elections Officer, will provide much more information at the next few meetings.
Election of Officers is held at the April 2018 meeting. The newly-elected Officers will be sworn in at the May meeting.
If you wish to nominate an individual, you should talk with that individual before you nominate him/her. Remember that only regular members in good standing of the Detachment are eligible. Associate members are not eligible for elective office. An example of a member "in good standing" is a regular member with current dues and active in Detachment activities.
Our Officers are important to the vitality of the Detachment. You might want to be considered. If you are, feel free to talk to any Detachment Officer.
SECTION 9.0: DUTIES OF ELECTED DETACHMENT OFFICERS
9.1 Commandant: The Commandant, as the Senior Executive Officer of the Detachment, shall preside over all meetings of the Detachment and the Board of Trustees. The Commandant will serve as an Advisor to all Committees. He/She shall direct and supervise the activities of the elected, appointed, and committee officers and chairpersons. He, together with the Adjutant/Paymaster or Paymaster shall be responsible for the integrity of finances of the Detachment. He, together with the Quartermaster, shall be responsible for the integrity of property management of the Detachment. He will ensure that the Detachment is represented at all civic, memorial and community functions where it is customary that Veteran's Organizations be represented.
9.2 Senior Vice Commandant: The Senior Vice shall assist the Detachment Commandant in every way presiding at meetings in the absence of the Commandant.
9.3 Junior Vice Commandant: The Junior Vice shall create and promulgate membership incentives and programs including the retention of delinquent members to ensure continuous membership growth. He/she will perform the duties of the Detachment Commandant and Senior Vice in the event of their absence.
9.4 Judge Advocate: The Judge Advocate shall become familiar with and interpret the Detachment Bylaws. He/she shall advise, construe, counsel and render opinions on questions of law and procedure to the Detachment Commandant during meetings. He/she will be privy to all staff and special meetings. He/she shall make decisions, on the local level in disputes, or, if unable to resolve the problem, refer to the next higher level, i.e., Department or National. He/she shall revise and make recommendations on submitted amendments to the Bylaws.

This will remain at the top of the Detachment POD until the elections.

Robert Vanas
1931 - 2018 Obituary Condolences Flowers
VANAS, Robert - 86, of Wayne, NJ, passed away on Monday, January 29, 2018, surrounded by his family. Bob was born on September 12, 1931, in Paterson, NJ. He was the founder and CEO of Vanas Construction Co., Inc. of Bogota, New Jersey; a builder of many school and other municipal projects throughout the state. He attended the Paterson school system, Central High School, and Newark College of Engineering. Bob was a longtime resident of North Haledon, NJ, where he was active in North Haledon little league baseball. He was a former member of the Board of Adjustment in North Haledon and of the North Haledon American Legion Post.
In 1951, he signed a baseball contract with the Philadelphia Phillies. Knowing he was going to be drafted due to the Korean War Conflict, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served as a Private First Class, Assistant Machine Gunner of Company H, Third Battalion, First Marines Regiment. He later rose to the rank of Corporal in the United States Marine Corps. Bob was a highly decorated veteran of the Korean War Conflict, where he received a Silver Star and three Purple Hearts due to his heroic efforts on March 26, 1953. A life size depiction of Bob is etched in the black marble of the Korean War Memorial in Washington D.C. He is a life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the Korean War Veterans, and the Marine Corps League.
He was a great outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, taking may trips with his three sons throughout North America. Bob also enjoyed fishing and boating in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where he spent many summers for the past 40 years with his family. In later years, he and wife, Roberta, also maintained a winter home in The Villages, Florida, where they have many friends and fond memories. (Bob was a Member of Our Detachment)
Bob was an avid sports fan; his favorite teams included the Boston Red Sox, New Jersey Devils and the New York Giants. He kept an active interest not only in professional teams but also in his grandchildren's soccer, softball and football teams where "Pop Pop" was a frequent spectator at many of their games in both New Jersey and Texas.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Roberta Giannella Vanas of Wayne; son Robert Vanas and wife, Ivette of Stuart, FL; son Glenn Vanas and wife, Sharon of Wayne; and son Bryan Vanas of Houston, TX; his seven grandchildren, Caitlan, Lindsay, Jenna Vanas of Wayne; Bryan Jr, Rebecca and Reece Vanas of Houston, TX; and Briana McCann of Los Angeles, CA. A grandson, Matthew Vanas of Wayne, preceded him in death.
Bob was a long time parishioner of St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church of Prospect Park, NJ (286 Haledon Avenue, Prospect Park, NJ 07508) where a funeral mass will be held at 9:30 am on Friday, February 2, 2018, with the burial at Laurel Grove Cemetery.
A visitation will be held from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at the Vander Plaat-Vermeulen Funeral Home (530 High Mountain Road, Franklin Lakes, NJ 07417) on Thursday, February 1, 2018.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the St. Paul Roman Catholic Church Building Renovation Fund.

FROM COMMANDANT NEALY FOR YOUR INFORMATION:
22 January 2018
To: Department of Florida Marine Corps League Members
From: George LaMont, Commandant
Subject: New Department Staff Position and Appointment
Fellow Marine Corps League members:
During a recent District Meeting a suggestion was put forward to consider creating a Department level position for social media. Your Board of Trustees took the suggestion under consideration. They concluded it would be beneficial for the Department and the membership.
I am pleased to announce the creation of a new Department Staff Position that will be known as “Social Media Coordinator”. Please join me in welcoming and congratulating Scott Blair to that position. Scott is a member of the Jack Ivy Detachment #666 where he currently serves as SVC. In this new position, Scott will be developing and implementing a social media plan for the Department and serve to assist the Detachments in developing their social media programs.
Social media is reputed to be the best method to communicate with and recruit the younger generation of Marines to the Marine Corps League. Social media alone will not generate new members; each current member must welcome the new members and be willing to accommodate the interests and needs of these younger members. They are the future of the Marine Corps League.
Scott can be contacted as follows:
Scott Blair, Department Social Media Coordinator
1818 SE Anece St.
Port St. Lucie, Florida 34983
772-332-1734; email: scott.blair@gmail.com
Semper Fidelis,
George LaMont
