Officers of District 5,
I sent out the address correction for Marine Opha May Johnson, without any background info.
Opha May Johnson (née Jacob, 4 May 1879 – 11 August 1955) was the first known woman to
enlist in the United States Marine Corps. She joined the Marine Corps Reserve in 1918, officially
becoming the first female Marine”. Opha May lies in an unmarked grave and therefore on the
100th anniversary of her joining the Corps, a fund raiser is being done to erect a headstone for her.
For additional information please contact, Kathryn Potthoff, DOF Woman Marine Association Liaison and President FL-2 Gulf Coast Chapter at jvcmdt.detachment54@gmail.com.
Semper Fidelis,
Tom
